Project 2: Gestalt Principles

The second project of the class was a tedious process. Out of 30 sketches, the artist must select 6 that represent the Gestalt principles best.

The most difficult part of this process was cleaning the image after scanning the drawing. Most of the time there was grain within the image that had to be covered up with black or white. I am grateful that color was limited to only black and white, I’m not the best when it comes to color composition.

Drawing was an extensive process due to the fact that I’m one to sit down and spend time on each piece, but I had to pick up the pace when it came to completing the entire 30 drawings.

I am extremely proud and amazed at the final product; I never thought that I could produce something so professional with only markers and paper. Throughout the drawings my common themes were Mexican aesthetics such as the calla Lillie, gecko, and sun and moon.

The in class critique was very insightful. I was very pleased to hear positive feedback and solid constructive criticism. As I stared at my final work I also realized a couple of tweaks I could’ve made to better enhance and push the Gestalt principle. For “Anomaly” I could have made the center calla lillie completely white (switching tones) in order to truly make it anomalous. The gecko was also an outlier in my theme. I feel that the rounding of the gecko would tie the pieces cohesively or I could’ve continued the sun and moon imagery.
