Project 3: Color Bridge (Color Theory)

The Prompt: Create a bridge that tells a narrative through texture and color. Use pieces of photographs, a minimum of 20 is required.

The first steps of this project was to explore a theme. I believe that my theme is evident, but I’m the creator so a viewer may not entirely be able to tell. Once I settled on a theme, I spent class time at the CDVL looking for copyright free images to incorporate into my bridge. It was quite hard, for all the photos I found that represented my theme best were repetitive so I used more than one piece from one photo.

I then had to figure out how I wanted to compose the bridge and what narrative I wanted to illustrate. The circular twists and curves made me feel like the composition was more whole; keeping the viewer in the image. I felt it was more effective to me to compose the positions of the image first rather than the color. In some of the pieces I even messed with the perspective to engage the viewer.

The use of color in this project was my biggest challenge. It is our first project involving color after a series of projects only using black and white. I used a mix of primary, secondary, and tertiary colors. I tried to adhere to at least 3 analogous colors before changing hues. I wanted to stick to very saturated colors because at the time, I was studying David Alfaro Siqueiros and his use of color. I steered away from lighter values because it made my photos appear almost faded but I wanted to show that these images are solid.
